Renee Maria Montoya is a detective with the GCPD who used to work under James Gordon. While the department no longer trusts the Bat Family, Renee still does and plans to fill Gordon's role of working with the vigilantes to protect Gotham City.

Before Gotham Knights[]
At some point, Renee joined GCPD as a detective, working for police commissioner Jim Gordon. She and Jim appeared to be good friends, respecting him as her boss. After Gordon's death, most of the GCPD became corrupt, and the department as a whole lost their trust in the Bat Family. Despite this, Renee continued Gordon's work, allying with the vigilantes away from her coworkers and superiors.
During Gotham Knights[]
Montoya is seen as an ally to the Bat Family, believing her superior, Commissioner Catherine Kane, to be wrong about them. As a result, she meets with them in secret, as a way to exchange information and even a warrant for the arrest of Kane Industries' CEO: Jacob Kane. She is brought to the Belfry, where she deduces the identities of Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin and Red Hood, while also planning to take down Kane. She is later seen escorting the disgraced soldier out, where he is then killed by Talia al Ghul. The League of Shadows, would then send several assassins to try and kill her and the other allies of the Bat Family, but she was saved by her vigilante allies.
